The Moretti family’s winemaking roots in the region date back to 1671, but it’s a more recent family story that inspired the name of the winery. After a falling out with his brothers, Adriano Moretti’s grandfather left home with his pregnant wife, two young children, a donkey, and little else. They settled in Monteu Roero, near Adriano’s grandmother’s family—known locally by the nickname “i bajaj,” or “the yawners.” The name didn’t stem from laziness, but rather from their easygoing, joyful approach to life. They worked the land without rushing, pausing for a glass of wine, a snack, or even a song. Wealth wasn’t the goal—having food on the table and a roof overhead was more than enough. Adriano, after earning a degree in political science and a brief career in politics, chose in 2014 to dedicate himself fully to winemaking. He named his winery Bajaj in honor of his grandparents and their philosophy of simple, fulfilled living. Today, Adriano’s family grows fruits and vegetables and runs a farm-to-table restaurant where his wines are served. They farm sustainably, following Integrated Crop Management practices across their orchards, vegetable plots, and 5-hectare (~12-acre) vineyard. Adriano currently produces around 20,000 bottles (~1,670 cases) annually, focusing on Arneis, Nebbiolo, Favorita, and Barbera. He collaborates with seasoned enologists to refine his craft but also enjoys experimenting—like aging some wines in amphorae—to express the land and tradition in new ways.
