Osvaldo Soddu
Osvaldo, the penultimate of eight children, grew up in Sardegna in a family involved more in sheep farming than viticulture. As a young boy he did not care much about the family vineyard; however, after inheriting from his father 1.5 hectares (~4 acres) of land planted with abandoned eighty-year-old grape vines in Mamoiada, he discovered his passion for winemaking. In his spare time, he planted new vines, restructured the old country house, and built his cellar. He works in the vineyard employing traditional old-fashioned methods such as using a hoe to plow the ground by hand. The experience and results from his first few harvests were very rewarding and encouraged him to start his first official bottling in 2019: 5,000 bottles (~400 cases) of cannonau in purity vinified in three versions, rosé, red and Riserva. Osvaldo shares his enthusiasm for winemaking with anyone who visits his tasting room, completely immersed in nature; quite literally, since he built a tree house where you can relax, sip his wines, and taste some of the local cheeses and cured meats served with the typical carasau bread. Overlooking the vineyards, sitting in old barrels over a glass of cannonau, Osvaldo will tell you stories of this small village of 2,500 inhabitants, where nearly everyone has been making wine for personal consumption for centuries and where oxen are still used to plow the vineyards.
