Podere della Torre
Diego and Franco’s friendship was born on the soccer fields when they were just kids. Thanks to their passion for wine and their land, in 2003 the two friends took over the reins of the company that had been in Diego’s family since the end of the 19th century. Diego’s great-grandfather, Eugenio Della Torre, had purchased 6-hectares (~15 acres) of vineyards and olive groves in Spoltore; however, it was Diego’s father and uncle who decided to build the cellar in the 1970s and start selling wine. Diego and Franco wanted to relaunch the winery by starting to bottle the wine that before was just sold in bulk, and they continued to make olive oil. They have been keeping the family heritage alive by utilizing old clones of the original plants whenever old vines needed to be replaced. Working only with Abruzzo native grape varieties they produce wines that are sincere expression of their territoriality, from the minerality given by the clay soil that also helps with the drought to the salinity due to the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea. And the best way to enjoy them? Try them with arrosticini, skinny kebabs typical of Abruzzo cuisine especially popular during the festive summer months, when people stay outside chit-chatting and munching until the early morning.
