Romolo Follador

In the 1950s Romolo Follador decided to start bottling his own wine which until then he had been selling to other wineries. His son Oliviero followed in his footsteps and took over the family business in the 1970s. After studying oenology, Oliviero’s sons, Alberto and Michele, assumed responsibility for the winery and brought state-of-the-art tools to the cellar; however, the family traditions are still alive. Many processes have remained the same such as cutting grass with a scythe and rearranging the cuttings along the rows to avoid using herbicides and encouraging the production of organic substances. They own 4.5 hectares (~11 acres) on a steep hill in Follo where, with less than 16 inches of soil, the roots of the Glera vines sink into the rocks. It is because of the best conditions of soil, exposure, position, and microclimate that Alberto and Michele are choosing to use the Valdobbiadene DOCG name on the 18,000 (~1,500 cases) bottles they produce yearly to highlight the difference from the mass-produced Prosecco in the plains.
