San Martin
The 6-year-old San Martin winery is owned by Alberto and his wife Julieta. Its name represents the union of two worlds: Europe and South America. In Piemonte, Alberto’s Italian region of origin, the day of San Martino is the farm rentals due date; farmland leasing is how they got started. But Josè de San Martin is also the general who freed Argentina, Julieta’s home country, from Spanish domination and whose quote “Serás lo que debas ser, o no serás nada” (You will be what you must be, or else you will be nothing) is the company’s motto. In addition to working the 2.5 hectares (~6 acres) of vineyards, Alberto and Julieta are busy renovating their farmhouse in Moncrivello where they make the wine and share it with anyone who comes to visit them. They only grow native vines of the Canavese region and vinify the grapes utilizing different methods, including a traditional sparkling and a passito, for a total yearly production of 12,000 bottles (~1,200 cases).
